winter sparrows
a leafless tree
swaying with borrowed buds
of numerous visiting sparrows -
tiny beaked pinecones
that just won't sit still,
the determined flurry
of each down-covered hop
to the next yet-unvisited branch
advertised so predictably by
those unavoidable chirps.
Jon Bohrn (1999)
