Thoughts in the carpool

Traveling north
along
the coast in her car,
I took refuge
in the bond
conversation brings between strangers;
admiring her skill
at meeting my eyes
and still driving.

Sharing our banquet of stories
I thought it’d be nice
           to just
           dance with her
           cheek to cheek,
if there were room to stand up,
and something good
on the radio.
