Ed's Restaurant - 2 AM
a shaker of salt,
half empty,
huddles on the edge of the chipped two-top1
whose coffee-ring stains
have been permanent memories a while.
the battered napkin dispenser
freckled with dried tiny spatters
grudgingly keeps it a secret
on whether or not it intends
to run out the next day;
the ketchup's on leave,
getting refilled in the kitchen,
a tired menu catches its breath,
its dog-eared corners
peek from the peeling plastic,
alert for the voices
of leaving waitresses.
